Al-Mg Friction Stir Welding

Public

Friction stir welding (FSW) has been used in industry for the past 30 years, and is a proven method of joining similar and dissimilar metals. However, research of material mixing, formation of intermetallics, and fatigue and corrosion behavior of dissimilar metal welds is relatively incomplete, especially with new FSW tool technology. Throughout this study, the effects of the welding process parameters on Al-Mg FSW will be investigated through a series of experiments. The welds will be characterized and used to machine tensile specimens to evaluate strength and ductility, in parallel with measuring microhardness across the welds. Also, microstructural characteristics of the welds will be reported, and discussions and recommendations will be provided towards the optimization of the process.
