Taxus plant suspension cultures can be used to produce paclitaxel, an anticancer compound. Currently PTX is administered systemically, which can have severe side effects. To minimize these effects, this project investigates the use of a plant cell culture (PCC) delivery system for paclitaxel through exploring retention of paclitaxel and other specialized metabolites through PCC processing, optimization of drug delivery through various polymers, predicted release in an in vitro breast cancer model, and consideration of the pharmacokinetics of the optimized system.
