Identifying Perspectives of Technology for Use in Community Gardens in Thessaloniki, Greece

Precision agriculture (PA) uses information technology, such as sensors and mapping applications, to help farmers manage crop and soil variability. The goal of these technologies is to optimize the use of inputs and reduce environmental impacts. A growing body of research has shown the value of this approach in both large and small scale farming operations. However, little is known about the potential for PA in urban agriculture, which accounts for some 20% of food production worldwide. Our project explored the interactions between PA technology and community gardeners in Thessaloniki, Greece. We found that motivations for gardening, gardening practices, and community dynamics influenced attitudes toward the technology.
