Henry Lucian Phillips, Class of 1893

Public Deposited

Henry Philips graduated from WPI with a degree in mechanical engineering. While a student, he wrote in the debut issue of the WPI Journal "it is safe to prophesy that not many years will elapse before scientific colleges will seriously consider [fire protection engineering] and include regular lectures or courses in their curriculum." Though nearly 80 years would pass before Philips was proven correct, he contributed major advances to early 20th century fire protection science. He advanced civil engineering inspection practices while employed as a manager at Factory Insurance Association, Hartford. He later served multiple terms as chairperson of the executive committee of the National Fire Protection Association.
