The Old Curiosity Shop (1840-41) contrasts urban and rural scenes, realistic language and sentimental rhetoric, and ultimately good and evil, by means of the grotesque dwarf Quilp and the pathetic Little Nell. The novel appeared in weekly installments in Dickens’s journal, Master Humphrey’s Clock. The first chapter appeared in the issue of 25 April 1840, and the remainder were published between 16 May 1840 and 6 February 1841. Four artists contributed original woodcuts for the novel: Samuel Williams and Daniel Maclise each provided a single image, and George Cattermole (who designed the wrapper for Master Humphrey’s Clock) and Hablot K. Browne contributed the bulk of the illustrations.
