Public DepositedElise and I were at the [?] for supper. Took Jim [Shevlin?] to Peoria to see L.J. Fletcher. This letter from Bill came Sept. 17th Dear Mother And Dad, This is not the first letter since Sunday that I've written to you, but the others were written in such a low frame of mind that I didn't mail them. I am writing now with a less desperate attitude. The boys here are largely the dregs of New York & Boston, over 50% are Jewish -- large in build with very little upstairs. We are worked pretty hard from 5:45 AM until five in the afternoon, at which time we take showers and shave for retreat at 5:45. We are free from 6:30 to 9:00 when lights go out. Our training is in heavy weapons, I have already carried a machine gun and it is heavy! Today we packed heavy field packs and took apart Browning machine guns. We are outside all day. It is rather (very) warm, but not what it must have been in the summer. We live in a cloud of red dust -- our shoes look like suede and [sic] the end of the day. Our barracks will be almost deserted this weekend. You see, it's Jewish New Year. 25 boys on my floor are going to New York on special passes for the occasion (over) DISPATCH _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ [Headline]: Assert Kiev Entered by Germans
