Tuesday, June 9, 1931 Clear At 430 this morning Harold White & I drove to Ames Iowa. 1st hour 51 miles 2nd " 57 " to Marshalltown 3rd " 52 " for breakfast. & reached Ames 205 miles at 855 Spent 6 hours there. With Collins in field with new cultivator they have developed for Catipillar (3 row) and Graham Paige ( 4 row) [Sketch ?] The idea is as I saw May 1st at Ames. Both outfits lacked flexability and regidity. The shovels chatter and do not keep an even depth and on account of no flexability do not conform to the inequalities of the ground. In pushing away the loose dirt after cultivating, weeds were found not uprooted. We do not think they have much. Cultivators single row 2 row Farmalls John Deere Other Motor Going we saw 93 18 4 Returning" " 199 29 9 2 3 all working in field. Most corn is 3" to 6" high. We left Ames at 240 and reached home at 650 [Photograph: caterpillar in field] Graham - Paige 4 row CULTIVATOR
