SATURDAY SEPT. 10 1949 [Letterhead: Publick House] [Letterhead: OLD STURBRIDGE VILLAGE] Chandler Bullock, Eleanor Allen Elise & I drove to the Publick House 38 miles where we had lunch. Then we went to Old Sturbridge Village. We went thru many of the old houses as we did last year I was particularly interested in the collection of old toys. At three oclock we went to the meeting house where we heard a most interesting talk on "The Ground Under Our Feet" by William S. Fowler of the Attleboro Museum Mass He told of the three stages of Indian life: that is the artifax found found in the loam, other in intermediate and subsoil. He demonstrated how the Indians hafted a tomahawk (Sept. 12 & 13) [Drawing: Tomahawk] [Postcard: Meeting House] And also how the squaws hafted a cultivator stone on piece of branch. [Drawing: cultivator branch] He used raw hide and the stones were firmly fastened We met Mrs George Wells who really runs Sturbridge Village. Nordhams here in evening.
