[Newspaper headline : Orders Convoys to Iceland] At lunch with Charlie Wiman he inquired about Bill. He said Bill could request a transfer to the Signal Corps. He said for Bill to write a letter to his commanding officer saying that with his education he feels he could serve the country better in the Signal Corps than in the Infantry. He should ask his corporal for an interview with the commanding officer and give him his letter. He thought we should wait to see whether Mrs. Ramsay's letter has any results. An all day Director's meeting. I shared the main state of the Finger Tip Control implements. They made a remarkable impression and a number said it is the next big thing in implements. Up to Sept. 10 our volume for the year is $108,000,000 and profits are estimated at $14,600,000. Deere & Co. are paying $2.00 a share on common stock. Bonuses are paid to production workers 4% of annual earnings for those of 5 year service, 3 1/2% for less service. It is thought that no more buildings will be erected in the immediate future. Materials for implements are hard to get but so far the factories have been able to keep going. The next few months will be acute. Hope to hear from Bill tomorrow, our thoughts are with him constantly. [Newspaper headline and article : U.S. Navy Starts Convoy Service]
