FRIDAY 59 February 28 Clear/Cloudy In field all day for first time with vine lifters Tried 3 kinds. 1. The shield similar to IHC but not suspended by spring seemed to bob along and as the shields could not strike the bottom of the [f ?] some of the low vines were not thrown out of the way of the wheels and were run down. I was not particularily impressed with this shield. It would need springs or flippers on the under side to keep from running over the plants. 2. Therear plow or rather corn catcher type with spring teeth, 3 on each side, seemed too wide. It seemed rather rough on the plants. 3. The type as shown on Jan 21. This type appealed more than any other. It seemed as tho there was less damage to the crop this way than any other. It is quite fine [?] as to just how the rows are set. To far forward lets vines slip in against wheels and too far back does no good. Rather felt that slanting the centers on which rods rotated would be wise as this would allow rods A & B Try this tomorrow [Sketch: slanting centers] to have thier points in and lift out as the lift up. This would keep from digging too close to roots. These rods must be lifted for backing up. It wont do any other rway. Either hand lift or connection with frame lift. Also experimental outfit too wobbly. Should make the final outfit here and try under all conditions. Also tried the solid shields in rear sttached to rigs. This opening 16" seemed too wide. We have to be very careful ast to let brgs of rear wheels get in touch with these shields or they will be crushed. Billy in field all day with me. Elise in bed to try and get over the flu. It has taken hold of her uncomfortably in her throat.
