Anna Waser's image of a Teufelsbrücke ('Devil's Bridge') in the Alps serves as a frontispiece in Johann Jakob Scheuchzer's Ouresiphoítes helveticus also known as the Itinera Alpina. Note the mining activity pointed out by the travelers and the pile of minerals behind them. Naturalists and miners preceded mountaineers in the Alps by many years.
