The Experiential Impact of Integrating Player-Provided Name into Video Game Audio Dialogue
PublicDownloadable Content
open in viewerThis paper attempts to determine, using survey data, whether video game players’ experience and immersion into a video game can be enhanced by having non-player characters (NPCs) use the name entered by the player and say it aloud during the dialogue. The player enters their name in both text form (for the game to represent the writing of the name) and using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) format (to represent the pronunciation of the name). The survey (N = 12) data indicates that respondents do tend to notice the existence of, as well as react positively to, the name audio text-to-speech system, though evidence is insufficient to show that the system causes the player to change their perception of the characters.
