Opportunistic RF Localization of Tire Pressure Monitoring System Transmissions
PúblicoAs the Internet of Things and self-driving cars continue to change the transportation landscape in America, one area of research explores how Smart Roads can aid in the localization and tracking of vehicles in urban settings where traditional localization technologies, such as GPS, fall short. In this thesis, Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) Signal of Opportunity (SOP) localization is explored. TPMS is installed in most vehicles on the roads today due to federal regulations. These systems contain wireless sensors which can be used for SOP localization without the need to augment vehicles already on the road. This thesis explored the viability of Received Signal Strength (RSS) localization of these TPMS transmissions in real-world conditions using low-cost software defined radios (SDRs). An RSS localization data set was generated through field experiments using a proposed framework. This data set was then used to support WPI Wireless Innovation Lab research into new SOP clustering and tracking algorithms.
