Development of a Performance Based (Multi-characteristic) Tool for Wall Insulation System Optimization

open in viewerAn insulation system, as a key feature in modern buildings, especially in green buildings, can affect various aspects of building performance. Current insulation system design approaches need to consider health, environment and fire safety characteristics. Selecting an optimum insulation system itself is challenging because of these characteristics and the wide range of possible options. To deal with this challenge, a performance based (multi-characteristic) tool for wall insulation system optimization is proposed in this research. This tool includes mathematical sub-models for five performance areas related to insulation systems: energy, soundproofing, fire safety, sustainability, and cost. The models were developed so that a designer can consider these characteristics of insulation systems for specific building scenarios. Using this multi-objective optimization tool, designers can compare various insulation systems based on their overall performance. This allows a designer to select optimum insulation systems for a specific building scenario. This tool also includes the AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process) method to assist in estimating weights, which is a crucial but challenging part of the weighted-sum method. The sustainability and fire safety issues of current insulation system design approaches are addressed in this research project. The Morris method, as a sensitivity analysis, is used to analyze the tool. The tool is applied in several examples, and these examples and model limit state analysis will help users to understand the tool. In addition to this, weights for the ten occupancies in IBC are also assessed using the AHP method.
