All solid state Li based batteries (ASSBs) are continuously gaining research interest in the energy community due to the several advantages they have over the conventional Li-ion batteries, ranging from improved safety to higher energy density among others. Similarly, cold spray (CS) technology (that allows for the deposition of particles on a substrate without having to melt the materials) is gaining enormous research interest in the coating and additive manufacturing industries. This is because CS can allow for a large-scale production and repair of materials ranging from structural materials to refractory alloys & energy materials. The interfacial contact between the electrode and electrolyte in the case of ASSB or between the particle and substrate in the case of CS as well as the deformation of these materials are crucial to these two technologies. For instance, in ASSBs, poor interfacial contact & electrolyte/electrode deformation (originating from the fabrication process or during the electrochemical cycling of the battery) can cause significant reduction in the battery performance characteristics. Also, particle/particle or particle/substrate adhesion in a cold spray process is strongly dependent on the surfaces in contact and the deformation upon impact. The results of the pressure induced interfacial contact and deformation, and the electrochemical cycling induced deformation in ASSB will be discussed as they relate to the mechanical degradation and the performance characteristics of the batteries. The implications of the results for the design of robust ASSBs with improved performance characteristics will be discussed. In addition, the deformation, and cracking phenomena in the CS processing of refractory Ta powders will be discussed which would provide some important insights for the design of cold spray processing conditions for refractory metals to ensure reliability and the robustness of refractory cold sprayed structures.
